Subsidence monitoring - what are the pros/cons?

Post by wharfbanger »

Dear All,

I have a general question regarding the practicalities of a ground subsidence monitoring program, using CloudCompare (paired with aerial photogrammetry), versus InSAR (say Sentinal InSAR data). My experience so far is with CloudCompare and point clouds from UAV photogrammetry (about 1km2 area), and the results are great. However I am wondering if the satellite/InSAR approach would be more cost effective if the monitoring is scaled-up to several areas, or finer temporal resolution is required (e.g. weekly snapshots). For those of you with some experience, are you able to comment on:

- pros/cons satellite InSAR versus repeat photogrammetry flights
- how easy is it to learn the InSAR processing work flow (i.e. raw data download to interferometry), and what is the best opensource sioftware - I am very much DIY
- other practicalities when considering a InSAR ground subsidence monitoring program

Thanks,
Mark
