Hi everyone,
long time CC user here, but a recent change of employer has put me in a situation where I need to find a workable solution to continue using CloudCompare.
Currently, I have access to a VM without a dedicated graphics card on which an old version (7+ years old) of CC ran - but with restrictions (shaders didn't word, for example). I've upgraded late last year to the current version and CC won't run anymore. Discussions with our IT department pinpointed the issue to a missing graphics card in the VM. The service provider for the VM isn't able to supply a GPU-enabled VM, so I was offered a possible solution by using a VM with GPU on AWS. Does anyone have any experience going this route? Daniel, do you see any problems with that setup? Also, I was surprised that CC stopped working after the update completely. Are the newer versions that much more demanding on the GPU side?
I'd be thankful for any feedback.
Cheers,
Jo
Use of CC via VM mit GPU through AWS possible?
Re: Use of CC via VM mit GPU through AWS possible?
Well, the GPU requirement is more a minimum OpenGL support (version 2.1 at minimum I believe).
But Qt (the framework on which CC is built) also blacklists some bad/old drivers that don't support OpenGL correctly. All in all, you need a viable GPU. I don't know if AWS' one works with CC (never tested myself). But if it works, the only risk is that the display rate is pretty low.

Thanks for the reply, Daniel. I appreciate your input. If we'll go that route, I'll write an update with my experiences in this thread.
